Meru MCAs Files Motion To Impeach Governor Mwangaza

Governor Kawira Mwangaza is accused of nepotism, illegal appointment, unlawful dismissal of county employees and appointment of her husband to a county office among other issues.

A Meru MCA has presented a petition before the Meru County Assembly seeking to have Governor Kawira Mwangaza impeached.

Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora, who also doubles as the Minority Chief Whip, proposed the motion to oust Mwangaza on grounds that she has breached the Leadership and Integrity act of Section 10 in the constitution.

Mr Kiogora has accused Governor Mwangaza of gross misconduct and abuse of office, saying she has engaged in a number of "discreditable acts" which he claims have created a toxic environment and invited ridicule to the county.

"The Governor has engaged in multiple discreditable acts that severally and collectively amount to gross violation of the Constitution, gross violation of various national and county laws, abuse of office, and gross misconduct," reads part of the petition.

"The office of the Governor, the Assembly and its leadership and the people of Meru County to, embarrassment, ridicule and disrepute," he added.

Kiogora proposed that Governor Mwangaza cannot be trusted to work harmoniously with staff and elected leaders at the national and county levels of government.

He added that Mwangaza's prolonged stay in office will cripple service delivery within the county for the interest of the Meru electorate.

68 MCAs have annexed the impeachment motion.

This lies on the backdrop of a resolved stalemate between Governor Mwangaza and the MCAs after a consultative meeting was held to address their differences.

The stalemate was instituted after the MCAs walked out on the Governor on grounds that she was allegedly belittling and ignoring their demands.

They later arrived at an amicable solution to concentrate on their constitutional roles of oversight, legislation, and representation.
